ABOUT ME
I know that for some, visiting a psychologist can be daunting - hopefully after reading this, you’ll feel a little more at ease about the process, and about me.
I am a strong believer in breaking down the traditional barriers of psychology. So often we are faced with images of serious and intimidating looking people, in even more intimidating looking suits - and told that they’re going to be the professional looking after our mental health. It is my mission, to offer therapy in an approachable, personable and jargon-free environment - one where you feel safe, cared for and understood.
After graduating, I moved straight in to private practice, which I really love. In this setting, I am able to create long-lasting, meaningful connections with my clients. Building relationships, trust and rapport in therapy is paramount - and evidence shows that the quality of the relationship you have with your psychologist is a predictor to how successful therapy will be. I feel it is such a privilege to be invited in to the most vulnerable parts of a person’s life and trusted to help them.
My work is based on four pillars (there are a lot more, but here are the ones I believe are most important). Respect, Autonomy, Open Mindedness and celebrating difference. I believe that with these four pillars being reciprocated, we have a strong potential for successful therapy.
My work is dynamic and ever-changing, just like the research in my industry. I draw upon a range of various therapies and these are including but not limited to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, Schema Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Talk Therapy, Mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Interpersonal Behavioural Therapy and Motivational Interviewing. You may not know what any of these mean, and that’s perfect - you’re not expected to. It is my job to individually tailor your treatment plan to what I believe will be most beneficial to you and our collaborative goals.
During sessions, I have been known to add in some light humour (only when appropriate of course) as I love to have a laugh. My clients describe me as perceptive, patient, insightful, warm and compassionate.
More personally, I am a massive dog person with an irresistible urge to pat every dog I come across - going for a walk can end up taking hours. Living in Melbourne I am also a bit of a coffee-snob these days and taking that first sip of an oat-latte is one of life’s simplest yet best pleasures. The beach is my happy place - only for the first hour though, then my water bottle gets hot, my towel is covered in sand, and the umbrella has blown away, which results in my patience wearing very thin. I also love to snow ski in winter and to drink Aperol Spritz in summer .
Most of all, I am really looking forward to meeting you.
